Thanks for revealing this grim story of the past. The Shawshank Redemption shone a spotlight onto these abuses by prison officials. Yes, “The past is never dead. It's not even past.” but you have done as much as can be done by researching and documenting. I can't see that selling these planes would be accomplish as much as calling out the historical injustice.

Very interesting article. As a former inmate of the TDCJ prison system, I feel some empathy of the accounts recorded of the punished prisoners. My experience was nowhere near this strict or barbaric and I'm glad I didn't have to endure the type of treatment they did. I only have a wooden jack plane at the moment, and all the others I possess are of the cast iron make; however, when I acquire more wooden planes in the future, my mind will ponder as to the origin and by whose hands, and by what circumstances the plane was made. Thanks for sharing this article!
